demons my friends (mexico city, mexico)

what makes dmf special?

Demons My Friends is considered special because they shatter the traditional boundaries of stoner metal, blending sharp cultural dualism, heavy emotional vulnerability, and an explosive DIY work ethic that caught the attention of rock royalty.

What sets them apart from typical doom and psych-rock acts comes down to a few key factors:

1. Cross-Border Cultural Identity

While founded in the live-music hub of Austin, Texas, all three members are Mexican-born musicians. They explicitly fuse Anglo-American heavy stoner rock influences (like High on Fire and Queens of the Stone Age) with a distinctly Latin American perspective on hardship and resilience. This cross-border DNA gives their songwriting a unique rhythmic groove and a darker, more cinematic atmosphere than standard stoner metal.

2. "Confronting Your Demons" as Therapy

Stoner and doom metal often rely on fantasy, sci-fi, or occult tropes. Demons My Friends rejects this, treating their music as aggressive, real-world group therapy.

Their name itself reflects the philosophy of making friends with your inner anxieties, depression, and self-doubt.

Their sophomore album, Survive/Yourself, was written in Cuernavaca, Mexico, as a direct reaction to real-life family crises, severe isolation, and pandemic-era job losses, turning profound personal trauma into crushing, heavy riffs.

3. Cosmic Coincidence Turned Power Trio

The band wasn't a calculated project—it was born out of pure musical serendipity. In 2022, the members happened to be in Austin for the SXSW music festival. They rented a studio for a casual, impromptu jam session just to see what would happen. The creative chemistry was so immediate and overwhelming that they walked out of that single session as a fully formed band with the blueprint for their debut album already tracked.

4. Direct Support for Rock Royalty

For an independent, underground heavy band, their rise has been astonishingly meteoric. Their raw energy and massive live sound caught the ear of Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson, who hand-picked Demons My Friends to serve as his direct tour support during his solo The Mandrake Project tour. Sharing massive stages with iconic rock royalty cemented them as one of the most formidable emerging live acts in the modern heavy psych scene.
